The terrariROOM is inspired by the idea that,in dedicating a space within your home tohouseplants, you are by extension dedicatinga space to yourself, for rest and relaxation. Asweeping carpet of Phelbodium aurum (bluestar fern) outside the building leads into andover the building, covering the floor, roof andparts of the walls. Feature plants hang fromtrees in Kokedama (moss balls that act aslow-maintenance ‘pots’ for the root ball),while mature specimens stand proud abovethe carpet of ferns, surprising and enticingvisitors to explore deeper through the foliage.Based on the concept of an immersive,life-size terrarium, all the plants have beenchosen and displayed in such a way as tomake their care as simple as possible.Grow lights, meanwhile, unshackle plantplacement from any particular proximityto a window, offering maximum flexibilityand versatility.

BLUE STAR FERN Phlebodium aureum

Blue star ferns were a big feature in the design (450 in total), we chose them because they are often cared for poorly and therefore people find them a bit tricky.

These ferns hail from South America where they grow on other plants, often found near the tops of trees.Their waxy blue leaves are coated in a natural SPF that allows them to tolerate lots of direct sunshine.

Because they are epiphytic (they grow on other plants) they don't need a huge pot and are happy to stay in their nursery pot.

You should water when the plant is dry, we recommend a soak. A light plant is a dry plant: the plant will feel heavier once it has absorbed enough water, they may even float when you first pop them in a bowl of water, when they start to sink they have generally absorbed enough to last them.

The Foku chair provided by &halt offers a space to recline and relax even further while immersing yourself in the calming space.

Pianta grow lights illuminate the space, providing the perfect growing conditions for all our plants whatever the sun is doing outside. Thank you so much to the team at Grow Gang for getting on board and joining us for this journey.

Ivyline provided the wonderful Hudson planter too.

PHILODENDRON

Philodendron

Another hero plant for us was the philodendron family. We pushed the limits a little due to reclassification to thaumatophyllum in some cases and we used a Rahpidophora too but hopefully we can be forgiven. We also used a Monstera deliciosa.

We chose these plants because they are very easy to care for and offer a wide range of dramatic foliage. These are plants that don't enjoy too much direct sun but can handle most other growing conditions, from very shady to bright. They are happy to dry between waterings and hold most of their leaves for a long time.

KOKEDAMA

We borrowed an idea from Japan. Kokedama which translates as Moss Ball. The art form involves creating a pot from moss and binding to the roots of the plant inside.

We have found after many years of trial and error that epiphytic plants adapt really well to living in a kokedama long term. We brought with us Galinda, a huge monstera delicious that has been growing happily in her Kokedama for over 2 years now.
